Oh Oscar, my darling Oscar

When I attempted to watch The Hurt Locker last weekend, I fell asleep. 20 minutes in. Perhaps I'll give it a second chance in a few years- but I don't have much interest in seeing it any time soon. None the less, it was pretty cool to see a woman make history and win Best Director. I loved the opener with Neil Patrick Harris and I thought Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin had perfect comedic chemistry. Their spoof on Paranormal Activity was probably their funniest moment.

  • Other highlights?
  • -Ben Stiller emerged on stage as a Na'vi to present for Best Makeup
  • -"Lady Kanye" interrupting the Director of Music By Prudence
  • -Sandra Bullock's acceptance speech, the tears in Jeff Bridges eyes when Michelle Pfeiffer was honoring him and Gabourey Sidibe's joy throughout the whole evening.
  • -Mo'Nique "You have to forego doing what's popular, in order to do what's right"
  • -UP winning for score and Best Animated Picture- and the modern dance portion that featured the score
  • -Zac Efron's presence. Here's the thing- he was so sweet on the red carpet, I'm a huge fan of Zac and every time I hear him speak I kind of love him more. He was really appreciative to be there- not to mention the intro him and Taylor Lautner were given was perfect, "us in five years"
  • -I loved the humility Miley Cyrus had after fumbling words during her Best Original Song introduction,  she quickly recovered when she admitted that both she and Amanda Seyfried were both very nervous as it was their first time up on the Oscar's stage. It was honest, sincere, and endearing.
  • -The way Sandra Bullock went to embrace Meryl Streep upon winning her Oscar- and Meryl's hushing her to just get up there and bask in her glory. Those two have had such a great rapport all award's season and that little moment really illustrated the support and camaraderie between the two.
And now, let's discuss my favorite looks of the night:
Best Dressed goes to Best Actress, which makes me so happy because I didn't love most of her red carpet looks throughout Awards season. I loved that she wore her hair down and let her Marchesa gown speak for itself. The jury is divided on the lipstick color- but I think it works

Some people are going to say this Atelier Versace on Demi Moore looks like a ruffled Ace Bandage, but I think it is stunning.

Crimson on Penelope Cruz- oh to be a lady in red....

Youthful and enchanting- I loved this water color chiffon on Rachel McAdams.
(PS does anyone else agree that her and Jake Gyllenhaal should date? They looked wonderful when they presented together, perhaps there was some sparks?)

Two praises for Miley in one blog post? Yup! I love the wicked corset top paired with a contrasting elaborate  fairytale skirt

This Marchesa dress reminds me of Enchanted Evening Barbie Doll, the Queen looks appropriately glamorous in it!

Wow Elizabeth Banks! This is her best red carpet moment to date

Cameron Diaz and I have the same style... well one can assume considering she wore one of my Top 10 Fall 2010 Fashion Week Looks from Oscar de la Renta (my exact words when I blogged it were 'a star fit for the red carpet')

I loved what the more sophisticated starlets wore on the red carpet, all of them dressing with such refined elegance- sleeves have sudden sex appeal when worn with such confidence,

Some dates of leading men have troubling holding their own on the red carpet... or even throughout the ceremony (yes Elisabetta Canalis I'm talking to you!!!) But Susan Bridges not only looked gorgeous but she had such grace and spirit on her husband's big night- you couldn't help but adore her radiance.

Kate Hudson tried to do this at the Golden Globes- leave it to a pro, Ms. Streep was a vision in white.

Sometimes the Queen pulls off the Princess look... Helen Mirren is just plain magical!

As for makeup and hair, I had two favorites,

For hair down formal, I think Kate Winslet nailed the Veronica Lake style

The earrings- the messy updo- something was so soft about her whole look. It was a great juxtaposition to her modern dress- which I didn't really love- but J.Lo can make anything work.

and now two things I didn't really love- that didn't really work....

Fembots on the red carpet? Was there an Austin Powers portion of the evening that I missed? I'm so perplexed by this.

In a camera shot from head to toe, my "ahhh" of  adoration turned into "ewww" of confusion. The top is breathtaking beautiful, the collision of color with the crystals and lavender is perfectly flattering to Zoe... then we get to the bottom where it looks like a giant cluster of paper mache grapes.

After that I need a palette cleanser ... so let's just close with this:

    Perfection.

Thoughts on the show? Favorite moments? Did you agree with the winners? Who was your Best/Worst Dressed? Please do share!
    -Jac

everything about Miley Cyrus being there would have been more tolerable if she had stood up straight and/or worn a dress that actually fit her.
