simulataneously belated on on time

One thing I've been trying to do on the blog is introduce you to my friends that I mention often- essentially a glossary has been created on Everyday Sassypants. That way when I tell a story about them or share something they sent my way, you actually feel like you have an idea of who they are. These introductions have been made when sharing their personal blogs, through the Style Icon series and birthday posts for some of my closest friends.

The birthday posts in particular are always more sentimental and really highlight that friend of mine. I consider myself a pretty decent birthday friend- I'm always game for celebration and my killer memory guarantees I never miss the date. That being said, last year I had a major birthday FAIL.

I mention Alec all the time on the blog and I joke that he is my one man viral marketing team. He always has something to say about the 'pants, whether pressuring me to post a video or complaining about my reviewing of tv shows that he doesn't care about. Any feedback is good and I value the support I receive from him and all of my friends when it comes to my blogging. The thing is- Alec got very slighted during the year that I did birthday blogs. This is because last year (birthday blogs ran from Oct.08-Oct.09) I simply did not know it was his birthday.

It was a rough time, those first few months when I had moved back to New York, and I was on a strict Facebook hiatus. Seriously, I barely went on and when I did, I kept the experience brief. During that rocky adjustment period, seeing all the fun in D.C. that I had left behind would have been too painful, so the Facebook ban was a healthy move. The only thing is- it would have reminded me that it was Alec's birthday. Days later, when a friend told me it had been his birthday, I felt horrible. Especially because Alec and I had gchatted on that particular day. There I was sass matassing my pants off while it was his birthday and I had done nothing to acknowledge it.

So here we are a year later- and today is indeed Alec's Birthday. This post is one year late- but I think it's value has appreciated in that time. It is very rare that you grow closer with a friend when you move a distance from them. But that's exactly what happened to Alec and I in the past year or so. For years, we shared the same good friends but we never really connected. When I actually lived in D.C.- we weren't close. But our friendship grew, through ordinary gchats, my visits to D.C.  and our wonderfully entertaining talent of him strumming the guitar and me freestyling lyrics along with him. You never know where you'll find a good friend, even if they've been in your life for a long long time.

So in honor of Mr.Brown's birthday I ask you to go out of your way to get to know someone you take for granted. You just might find out that they add an extra dazzle to your day.
Alec looking deceptively normal...

Happy 26th old man- I'm kind of glad I missed the opportunity to do this the first time around.

Great post - I too was disappointed when I didn't get a bday message, which is why the ESP has made up for it with extended wedding posts, <3. Not going to lie, I was hoping for a classic Alec picture to accompany the post.

Happy Birthday and everyday Alec!
